Denmark is easily one of my favourite parts of the southwest coast of Western Australia. This beautiful region is home to plenty of adventures, both on land and water. Nature lovers will enjoy exploring the various hiking trails, and beachgoers can soak up the sun at one of Denmark’s many beaches. With so much to do and see in this corner of the continent, let’s get stuck in.
Top Things to do in Denmark
1. Greens Pool
Greens Pool is one of Denmark’s most popular tourist destinations. The protected bay is renowned for its crystal clear water and white sandy beaches. Visitors can swim and snorkel in the sheltered waters, or relax on the beach and take in the stunning surroundings. The natural rock formations create a unique landscape, and the area is home to an abundance of marine life. Greens Pool is a paradise for nature lovers and a great spot for a family day out.
2. Elephant Rocks
Situated a short walk from Greens Pool, Elephant Rocks is home to a number of rocks that, with a bit of imagination, look like elephants basking at the water’s edge. The elephant-shaped rocks have been naturally created over time by erosion. Visitors can explore the rocks and take in the stunning views from atop.
At the top of the rocks, there is a wooden stairway leading down to a narrow entrance that opens out onto a small beach. As the tide comes in the passageway fills with water putting a lot of people off from venturing to the hidden beach, so if you’re looking for somewhere a little more private (unless it’s a scorcher of a day) it’s worth wading through the water and having the beach to yourself. Elephant Rocks is a great spot for photography, picnicking, and simply enjoying the natural beauty of Denmark.
3. Explore the small beaches of Wilson Inlet
Wilson Inlet is a large body of water located in Denmark. The inlet is sheltered from the ocean, so the water is usually calm and flat making it perfect for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and swimming. There are also plenty of secluded spots to anchor your boat and explore the sandy beaches. Wilson Inlet has been named the best fishing spot in Denmark, with species such Pink Snapper, Sea Mullet and Blue Mackerel being common catches.
4. Grab a burger and locally brewed cider at Denmark Good Food Factory
After a morning of sightseeing and swimming, be sure to head over to Denmark Good Food Factory, an 8-minute drive from Greens Pool. They serve home-brewed ciders and make THE best burgers. Their homemade burgers include Bacon ‘N’ Bum Nut, The Blues (blue cheese heaven), and The Crazy Crab, as well as veggie and vegan options. You will not be disappointed after a feed here. Still not convinced? Check out their menu.
5. Go 4WDing at Boat Harbour Beach
Located a 25 minute drive west of Greens Pool, Boat Harbour Beach in Parryville is well worth the visit. Only accessible with a 4×4 vehicle, this area provides many offroading tracks and unique beaches to explore. Boat Harbour Beach is a sandy, sheltered bay with great finishing and swimming conditions. Drive onto the large rock on the near the entrance of the beach and follow the thin, overgrowing pathway by foot down to a tiny beach covered with shells.
If you’re looking for somewhere to stay whilst in the area, we recommend Boat Harbour Beach Camp. It has all the facilities you’ll need and, though a little rough around the edges, is a real hidden gem of a spot.
6. Venture out to the Valley of Giants
If you’re looking for a truly unique experience, a visit to the valley of giants in Walpole is a must. Though not situated in Denmark, we think it’s well worth taking the 30 minute drive from Denmark to Walpole. Driving through the valley is simply breathtaking (and free!), but the view from the treetop walk is even better. The valley is home to some of the tallest trees in Western Australia, and the walkway takes you right up into the canopy, 40 meters above ground level. Book your tickets for the treetop walk at the gift shop and make it an experience you won’t soon forget.
With so much to do in and around Denmark, it’s most definitely worth spending more than a few days exploring the area. Whether you are traveling with friends, family, or even solo, there is something that’ll be right up your street in Denmark.
